The poet describes his experience of hearing rain falling on leaves. Context: This poem is a short, beautiful meditation on the sounds and sights of rain falling on leaves. The poet describes the sound of leaves " drinking " the rain and notes that even the poorest leaves beneath the richer ones are nourished by the drops. The poem celebrates the beauty and transformative power of rain, as well as the hope and renewal that can come after a storm. “I hear leaves drinking …. green leaves near.” The sound of the rain falling on the leaves is described as a " sweet noise ," suggesting that the speaker finds it pleasing and perhaps even comforting.
